Vet Tech Students Find Success at Show
Last weekend, seven Elkhart Area Career Center Veterinary Science and FFA members traveled to show their pigs at the Green and White hog show. It was held at the Michigan State University livestock pavilion, in East Lansing, Michigan.
Students wanting to participate in the program are responsible for the daily care and management of the animals, beginning in October of 2017. They learned proper nutrition, vaccinations, identification practices, proper daily care, and showmanship preparation. Students took the skills they learned in the classroom and at the school farm (ACCELL) through hands-on activities, and applied them by participating in Skillathon, Showmanship, and Livestock Evaluation Judging and exhibition in market classes.
Green & White was the first time any of the students participating had shown swine. The students placed extremely well in this highly competitive event that was attended by over 400 students. Alexandria Stout (Penn) won Reserve Champion Overall Live Animal Evaluation. She also won her group for Livestock Judging. Ashley Asher (Elkhart Memorial), Abigail Huss (Elkhart Memorial), and Mikayla Tice (Jimtown) also won their groups and placed in the top 20.
Students that attended the show are: Mikayla Tice (Jimtown), Victoria Myers (Penn), Alexandrea Stout (Penn), Kelsey Stephenson (Penn), Abigail Huss (Memorial), Ashley Asher (Memorial), and Maddie Yuhas (Sturgis).
