Elkhart Central has an excellent, well-rounded music department with course offerings for the non-performer as well as the performer. Our Symphony Orchestra is one of the top orchestras in the state of Indiana, performing in the ISSMA State Concert Organization Finals nine times since 2008.
Shown at left with representatives from band, orchestra, and choir is the banner received in recognition of the music department honor of the All-Music (Total Department) Award for 2018-2019, one of only 14 high school music departments in the state so awarded by the Indiana State School Music Association. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of spring ISSMA events, no All-Music Awards were presented for the 2019-2020 academic year.
The Total Department Award has been received by ECHS eight times since the inception of the All-Music Award in 2002-2003, with at least one area of the department (band, choir, orchestra) receiving the All-Music designation each year the award has been presented.
In addition to participating in the courses and ensembles listed below, students in the music department also participate in the annual school musical and in the school musical pit orchestra. The school campus has three large music ensemble rehearsal rooms, a 16-station piano keyboard and computer lab, twelve practice rooms of varying sizes (most with pianos), and a 900-seat auditorium, as well as a dedicated paved practice field and tower just across the street from the music entrance for the marching band program.
