Lemonade Day is May 4
More than 500 Elkhart Community Schools students participated in Elkhart's first Lemonade Day last spring and organizers are hoping to at least double that amount at this year's event on May 4.
National Lemonade Day is a free, community-wide, educational initiative designed to teach children how to start, own, and operate a lemonade stand. The event is open to students in kindergarten through grade 12.
Students can register online or they can download a registration form and turn it in to their school office. Three free workshops will be held at Concord Mall to teach interested students more about the entrepreneurial process. Learn more here.
Each child that registers for Elkhart's Lemonade Day will receive a yellow backpack containing an entrepreneurial workbook for the child as well as a guide for an adult mentor. The workbooks outline the steps needed to start a business, including setting a goal, creating a business plan, forming a budget, finding an investor, and choosing where to locate the business.
The goal of Lemonade Day Elkhart is to teach local youth how to start and run their own lemonade business. Through the enterprise, children will learn the entrepreneurial skills necessary to be successful in the future and become contributing members of their communities.
The best part of the program for kids is that after covering their expenses and paying back their investors, they can keep what they earn. With this in mind, chuildren are encouraged to open a youth savings account so their profits can continue to grow. They are also encouraged to give a portion of their earnings to charity.
Students participating in last year's inaugural event sold an estimated $25,000 worth of lemonade, including tips and donations. Most stands averaged between $80 and $100 in sales, with several of them earning as much as $400. |

On May 2, participants will have the opportunity to compete at a tasting ceremony at Concord Mall. Prizes will be awarded to the stand owners with the best tasting lemonade, the most creative stands, and the most innovative lemonade businesses. Learn more here.
Lemonade Day Elkhart is being organized by Elkhart businessman Amish Shah and a committee or area volunteers. More than 30 volunteers, including children and teen agers, gathered at Concord Mall Feb. 21 to stuff 2,000 yellow backpacks with workbooks, important information, and tools for getting their lemonade business started.
Anyone and everyone can be involved in Lemonade Day Elkhart. Young entrepreneurs need mentors, investors, employees, and customers! Sponsors and volunteers are also needed to make Lemonade Day a success. All money raised through local donations and sponsorships will be used to directly support Lemonade Day Elkhart.
