The Elkhart High school West Music Department enrolls over 450 students in 10 different music related courses. These include several levels of chorus – including Madrigal singing and vocal jazz, two levels of orchestra, three band classes – including a full year jazz ensemble and a competitive marching band, three piano classes, and music theory and AP music theory. Ensembles regularly receive gold ratings at ISSMA contests and festivals, and in 2014 the music department was one of only three Indiana high schools with a band, orchestra, and choir program awarded the ISSMA All-Department All-Music Award. The department also oversees participation in the all school musical, as well as two competitive winter color guards and a winter percussion ensemble. The students take advantage of many performance related trips ranging from short musical and symphony day trips to Chicago, to performance trips to New York and Orlando, Florida.
