The Elkhart Area Career Center was the first school to qualify two teams for the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow World Championships last year and it repeated the fete this year. Teams qualify by winning one of the six divisional tournaments held around the country or by posting one of the 12 fastest times at the tournament. The Elkhart teams finished sixth and seventh in the nation. Each of the 10 team members earned a $15,000 college scholarship.
The event itself resembles the tear down between rounds at a drag race. Students must properly disassemble the engine using hand tools only with proper detorque and disassembly procedure. Time added penalties for dropped tools, improper disassembly, assembly, and poor sportsmanship, are added. The engines, when reassembled, must fire up and be ready to run. The team with the fastest time, including penalty minutes, wins.
This was Elkhart's third time to compete for the national title. An Elkhart team placed second in the nation in 2009, the first year of the competition. | |
