The Central High School Anime & Manga Club hosted a community block party on the Elkhart Civic Plaza June 5. The goal of the event was to raise money to expand the Central Library's graphic novel collection and to introduce Michiana to animae, a Japanese art form.
The block party included a variety of activities including Cosplay, in which students dressed up as their favorite anime character and acted out skits; Amtgard demonstrations with foam swords; PlayStation competitions with the chance to win a PlayStation 3; and the viewing of an Anime, a Japanese animated movie.
There were also booths offering Japanese cusine, a rice ball making station, and candy and bake sales. Central art teacher Christine Wolfe-Tingey, sponsor of the Anime & Manga Club, said art students hosted the block party to introduce local residents to animae, which a lot of teens are interested in, and to provide Elkhart with another form of entertainment.
