Elkhart Memorial Girls Basketball Adopts Local Families

As the girls’ basketball coach at West Side Middle School, Krista Hennings sees and hears a lot of the things happening at West Side and with West Side families. When she heard about a family who was struggling, she saw it as an outreach opportunity for Elkhart Memorial’s girls’ basketball team, where she is an assistant coach.

“The girls liked the idea of helping a family in need,” said Hennings. “I reached out to the parents of the girls at Memorial to let them know what we were doing, and the response was incredible.”

What began with one family in mind, soon led to enough donations to help an additional three Elkhart families in need.

“One of our moms had already told her kids that there would not be a Christmas this year,” said Hennings. “When we told her what our girls had done, she just cried and cried. She was so grateful.”

“We believe it’s important for our students to give back to the community who so generously supports them,” said Jacquie Rost, Memorial’s Athletic Director. The team will also be donating a holiday meal to the families.

“For some of the families, we’re providing them with the gifts, as well as wrapping paper and tape. We know the moms would like to wrap the gifts and put them under the tree, knowing they helped provide their kids with a great Christmas morning.”
