Why are School Boundaries Changing?
When plans for the repurposing for Hawthorne Elementary were introduced, the first plan was for students at Hawthorne to be sent to Mary Beck and Roosevelt Elementary Schools because they had the most room. However, as the work team considered what made the most sense and as the district listened to the community, the work became guided by the following 6 principles:
-
The district needed to utilize current teacher counts in all buildings except Beck and Roosevelt. Hawthorne teachers would move to Beck and Roosevelt as the numbers of classrooms increase.
-
The district would work with the number of desired classrooms per school based upon the existing teachers in Beardsley, Daly, Monger, and Riverview and the addition of Hawthorne teachers at Beck and Roosevelt.
-
The district has set the target to maintain an average class size ratio of 20 students to 1 teacher in Beck and Roosevelt while also maintaining class size ratios in other buildings.
-
The district needed to balance opportunities for students with trying to keep a neighborhood feel and not increase walk zones.
-
Transportation needed to utilize the 4 existing buses that serve Hawthorne for redistricting and not add additional buses if at all possible.
-
Overall, the district needed to smooth out and clean up boundaries as appropriate to remove inconsistencies.
