Performing Arts

It is essential that children of every age have pleasant musical experiences. Participation in music activities contributes to a positive self-image, teaches self-discipline, provides a means of self-expression, and enhances sensitivity to aesthetic awareness. It teaches students the beauty of working together and of making artistic contributions to their community. The ECS Music Department encourages all students who have an interest and ability to participate in the music program.

Elkhart Community Schools offers a wide range of performing arts options for our students, including band, orchestra, choir, madrigal and theatre. Many of these programs start in elementary school, and our music curriculum begins in kindergarten at each our fourteen elementary schools.

Under the guidance of award-winning musical directors, our band, orchestra and choir programs consistently perform at the highest level, winning gold awards at ISSMA Festivals and qualifying for state finals. Members of our musical ensembles have also been given the opportunity to perform at incredibly unique venues and events, such as on the Lerner Theatre stage with Foreigner, at the Indy 500 and at Walt Disney World. Elkhart Community Schools is fortunate and grateful to team up with local businesses and organizations, such as Conn-Selmer and the Elkhart Municipal Band, to help support our musicians.

Musical and theatre productions are prevalent in each of our schools, with instruction and performances beginning in kindergarten. Our performing arts program is strengthened by our partnership with Premier Arts, Elkhart’s award-winning professional theatre group. By classroom instruction throughout our district, and in conjunction with our teachers, Premier Arts helps instill civic pride, confidence and character building for our students through an unmatched education in performing arts and theatre. Our students not only attend many productions by Premier Arts at the Lerner Theatre, but also successfully try out and perform in a number of them.

Elkhart has a rich history of music and theatre. We’re proud to embrace this history, and help develop talented performers to carry on the legacy.
